← Back to A day in the life

We recently had a chance to catch up with Waukee APEX Alumna, Alli Steele, and we were excited to hear about the opportunities that she has experienced since leaving our program. Continue reading to find out more about the direction that Alli’s life has taken since graduation.

1.) What Waukee APEX course or courses did you take, and what were some of the experiences that you had in those courses?

As a senior, I was able to take the DMACC Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course. This class allows students to experience real-world, in the field medical emergencies and how to work both in the ER and on an ambulance responding to 911 calls. I was able to work alongside EMS professionals, learn from lab experiences simulating patients, go to Camp Dodge’s medical simulation, tour LifeFlight at Methodist Hospital, and so much more. Throughout class we were trained how to triage, assist, stabilize, and transport different patients experiencing medical emergencies and traumatic injuries.

2.) What other experiences did you have while in the Waukee APEX program that contributed to your growth as an aspiring professional?

Working alongside others in EMS from EMTs, Paramedics to nurses and doctors.

Additionally, working as a team and having labs at Waukee FD was greatly beneficial in growing my understanding in EMS.

3.) Can you explain the path that you have taken after high school?

Since graduating in May 2024, I remain working at my School-to-Work placement as an

EMT. As for college, I am attending DMACC to become a Paramedic. It is a year-long program designed to get field experience and a broader skill set/knowledge base to help clinically treat patients. I have also recently stepped into an EMT Skills Instructor position allowing me to come and help teach different DMACC EMT classes like Waukee, WDM, and Ankeny.

4.) How did your experience in APEX help shape or solidify your plans after graduation? How did this course help you prepare for your future career?

EMT is the baseline education needed to pursue paramedic school. APEX was step one into my future career. Not only was I exposed to what a career in EMS would look like, but I have continued learning and growing ever since.

5.) Do you have any advice for future APEX associates?

APEX gives a unique opportunity to make connections, ask questions, grow professionally, and explore different career paths. Take advantage of your time in high school and don’t be worried about having it all figured out, but know you are in good company.
